Dish of the Week: Picada de la Abuela at Las Delicias de la Abuela

A meat mountain. That’s pretty much what you get when you order the Picada de la Abuela at Colombian restaurant Las Delicias de La Abuela.

Picada translates here to “little bites,” and this platter is full of meaty nibbles that range from chunks of chorizo and blood sausage to pork cracklings, pork ribs and slices of superbly grilled chicken.

Adding to the pile is an overload of irresistible carbs. There are house-made beef empanadas cut in half, wedges of hot corn cakes known as arepas, strips of fried yucca, French fries and boiled potatoes.

This smorgasbord is not one you can consume alone. You need three, four, even five friends. Take them to the fairly new Las Delicias location in the Buford Highway Farmers Market plaza in Doraville, and turn dinner into a fiesta by planting yourselves at one of the picnic tables in the rear dining room.

Grab that bottle holding a blend of mayo and ketchup and squirt it on your fries and yucca. Dip the arepas into the runny, medium-spiced Columbian-style salsa. Ask for a side of warm hogao, a Columbian criollo sauce of stewed peppers and tomatoes, akin to Spanish sofrito. Dunk anything and everything in that. There’s more than one way to the top of a mountain.
